Sapiens Background Paintings
I wore many hats while working on Sapiens, one of them was as background painter. My time in this area was short as I got pulled away to work on animation, but I still managed to create a few good pieces.
As Lead Color Stylist and Team Tank, I got to paint the establishing shot for Sapiens (line art by Austin Ho). The pictures on the left were meant to be placeholders but our illustrator fell through and my dopey sketches made the final film.
The painting style we used was inspired by the layouts of 101 Dalmations and Steven Universe, I created this tutorial to help the rest of the painting team finish the layouts.
Somehow three people got assigned to paint the same layout (doh!) but this one was my take. (Line art by Austin Ho)
The Hang in There! poster was courtesy of a joke by my friend Elizabeth Thanos; she was delighted that I included it in the final version! (Line art by Austin Ho)
This one piece was such a group effort--layout line art by Austin Ho, layout coloring by me, rough animation by Bruno de Mendonca, and clean up animation started by Emelia Waterman and finished by myself.
