Sapiens Visual Development - Marck's Room Color Key

In the original pitch for Sapiens, Marck has his dark night of the soul moment in his room, which is covered in science paraphernalia and his own homemade experiments.

I've always been charmed by the backgrounds in Ghibli films and how they have layers of history so I tried to add that into Marck's room.

I usually start with local colors before I move on to how the lighting will affect those colors.

Time for some lighting!

The tone of this scene was melancholy so I made the whole thing a little cooler and less saturated. I like to joke that Marck looks so sad in this picture because this scene got cut.
