Sapiens Visual Development - Francis' Lab Color Key

In the very early days of pre-production for our senior thesis film, Sapiens, I developed 3 color keys to explore character and set design, colors, lighting, and mood. The final product turned out very different (as usually happens in production) but I still enjoy these early images of a sunny laboratory filled with greenery.

Sometimes when I'm working on a shot I go HAM on the sketch phase... other times I go just go popcorn chicken... this right here is a popcorn chicken sketch.

One reason I went so light on the sketch is because I quickly developed a strong mental image of the values for this piece and set to blocking those in.

At this point in pre-production we had no idea what the lab would look like, but I like plants. So I drew plants!

I slowly added detail using values.
